Since its inception in 1983, The Friends Committee of the Fort Tryon Park Trust has been known primarily for its beautification
and cleanup efforts. While this is still a strong focus for us, it's not all. We also have
- Planted thousands of bulbs, including daffodils from the city-wide, post 9/11 Daffodil Project.
- Transformed the subway terrace, and are restoring the iron fence. Now this dark and litter-strewn corner of the park is a colorful spot
that heartens commuters and welcomes ping-pong and volleyball players.
- Helped seed four lawns in the park.
- Helped get the much-needed New Leaf Cafe into the park.
- Installed two tire-swings in the Jacob Javits Playground.
- Funded a variety of tools and equipment for the park and Heather Garden, including water-conserving soaker-type watering hoses.
- Produced and sold a series of beautiful one-note cards.
- Sponsored and co-sponsored park events including Earth Day Celebrations and 9/11 commemorative events.
- Joined forces with other community groups to champion park rights and funding.
- Worked with the Parks department in implementing the Heather Garden Endowment.
- Sponsored free Sunset Yoga classes
- Sponsored free year-round Fitness Walks
